Moses spoke to the people, saying:
"This day the LORD, your God,
commands you to observe these statutes and decrees.
Be careful, then,
to observe them with all your heart and with all your soul.
Today you are making this agreement with the LORD:
he is to be your God and you are to walk in his ways
and observe his statutes, commandments and decrees,
and to hearken to his voice.
And today the LORD is making this agreement with you:
you are to be a people peculiarly his own, as he promised you;
and provided you keep all his commandments,
he will then raise you high in praise and renown and glory
above all other nations he has made,
and you will be a people sacred to the LORD, your God,
as he promised."

How To Bind Your Heart To God's Heart During Lent

In your prayer time, imagine God the Father is so pleased with you that he's telling the angels how wonderful you are. What is he saying?
This Saturday's first reading is an example of what it means to be in a covenant relationship with God. A "covenant" in scripture is not a contract; it's the binding together of two hearts: yours and God's.
When we walk in the ways of the Lord, turning away from the moral compromises of the world and the self-centered idolatry of deciding for ourselves what is right vs wrong, what is acceptable vs sinful, we bind our hearts to the Father's heart.
God's part in this covenant is: "I will then raise you high in praise and renown and glory!"
God the Father is glorifying you and praising you! Yes, really! But when our deeds are not in keeping with the ways of Christ, and if we refuse to go where Jesus is leading us on the journey of faith, then we are breaking ourselves -- OUCH! -- against the covenant that God has made with us. We are breaking our relationship with God.
Decisions and behaviors that break us makes us feel anxious, fearful, lonely or unloved. This Lent, use these as clues that reveal how you need to repent and turn back to God. You will then receive grace, healing, and new spiritual growth.
For example, in Saturday's Gospel reading, Jesus tells us to love our enemies. When we fail to do this, the people who are giving us a hard time gain control over our emotions, our mood -- they steal our joy. But when we pray for them and do good to them, we break their hold on us. The Lord our God, because of his covenant relationship with us, strengthens us and blesses us. He glorifies us. This is the most awesome victory over evil-doers we could ever have!
