First Sunday of Lent

Reading 1GN 2:7-9; 3:1-7

The LORD God formed man out of the clay of the ground
and blew into his nostrils the breath of life,
and so man became a living being.
Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east,
and placed there the man whom he had formed.
Out of the ground the LORD God made various trees grow
that were delightful to look at and good for food,
with the tree of life in the middle of the garden
and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the animals
that the LORD God had made.
The serpent asked the woman,
“Did God really tell you not to eat
from any of the trees in the garden?”
The woman answered the serpent:
“We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden;
it is only about the fruit of the tree
in the middle of the garden that God said,
‘You shall not eat it or even touch it, lest you die.’”
But the serpent said to the woman:
“You certainly will not die!
No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it
your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods
who know what is good and what is evil.”
The woman saw that the tree was good for food,
pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom.
So she took some of its fruit and ate it;
and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her,
and he ate it.
Then the eyes of both of them were opened,
and they realized that they were naked;
so they sewed fig leaves together
and made loincloths for themselves.

Brothers and sisters:
Through one man sin entered the world,
and through sin, death,
and thus death came to all men, inasmuch as all sinned—
for up to the time of the law, sin was in the world,
though sin is not accounted when there is no law.
But death reigned from Adam to Moses,
even over those who did not sin
after the pattern of the trespass of Adam,
who is the type of the one who was to come.
But the gift is not like the transgression.
For if by the transgression of the one, the many died,
how much more did the grace of God
and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ
overflow for the many.
And the gift is not like the result of the one who sinned.
For after one sin there was the judgment that brought condemnation;
but the gift, after many transgressions, brought acquittal.
For if, by the transgression of the one,
death came to reign through that one,
how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace
and of the gift of justification
come to reign in life through the one Jesus Christ.
In conclusion, just as through one transgression
condemnation came upon all,
so, through one righteous act,
acquittal and life came to all.
For just as through the disobedience of the one man
the many were made sinners,
so, through the obedience of the one,
the many will be made righteous.

What victory do you need this Lent?

How do you deal with temptation? That's the personal challenge given to us by the Word of God on the first Sunday of Lent. And so we begin our journey with Jesus, traveling to the holiest place we can reach at this point in our lives.

This Lent is like no other Lent. Last year, you had different needs, different areas of growth, different levels of insight and understanding. Much has happened since then, and all of it is a preparation for what the Lord is going to do in your life right now.

What victory do you need this year? What needs to be resurrected? To get there, Jesus will lead you through the cross of penance and self-denial, into his tomb, and out into God's light where his love provides healing and new life.

During Lent -- and every time we make sacrifices and connect our sufferings to the Passion of Christ -- we follow Jesus to the cross and to resurrection. This involves seeing our own crosses in a new light, for the Calvary Road is the only way to reach the victories that we yearn to experience.

If we want Easter to be more than just a holiday of colored eggs, chocolate bunnies and big dinners, we have to make Lent more than just 40 days of enduring an annoying, obligatory sacrifice, eating meatless pizza on Fridays, and going to an occasional extra event at church.
If we want to experience the power of resurrection, we have to experience the power of mourning and repenting from our sins. In other words, we have to experience the powerlessness of death -- the death of our selfishness, the death of our worldliness, the death of our behaviors that are not like Christ's.

Today's Prayer
Dear Lord, I want to die to everything that prevents Your plans of love from being fulfilled in me. Strengthen my soul for this battle. Amen.

How the Cross can Cure Depression

the Cross
"Follow me," says Jesus in Saturday's Gospel reading. And the other readings tell us how:

Remove oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; share your food with the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; honor the Lord, not following your own ways.

Then light shall replace your darkness. What makes you feel gloomy? Follow the Lord and he will guide you and will lead you to his abundance, even in the midst of parched and desert-like conditions. Following Jesus takes us to the purifying cross, but it also leads us to the fruits of purification, i.e., the benefits of being a child of God.

Teach me your ways, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth.

MY OWN CRUCIFIXION

Darkness closes in upon me,And hopelessness is near;This pain I cannot bear much longer --Why me, O God, why me?

Cry out full-throated and unsparingly,

They seek me day after day,
and desire to know my ways,

and not abandoned the law of their God;
They ask me to declare what is due them,
pleased to gain access to God.
“Why do we fast, and you do not see it?
afflict ourselves, and you take no note of it?”
Lo, on your fast day you carry out your own pursuits,

Would that today you might fast

How does fasting from meat change anything?

Today is the first Friday of Lent, a day of conscious self-purification. We remind ourselves of this by fasting from meat. The idea is to deny ourselves something tasty so we can grow in self-control for the sake of overcoming sinful tendencies.

However, in our modern age when we have an abundance of tasty foods, meat is not the luxury food it used to be. The Church asks us to go meatless on Fridays for an important spiritual purpose. We would do well to enhance this ancient rule by fasting from any and all luxury foods. This is not the day to go out to a restaurant and order lobster!

The purpose of this is to stop catering to our likes and preferences, thus improving how well we turn outward toward others and their needs. Today's first reading reminds us that fasting is worthless if we're unkind to others and we focus only on ourselves: for example, if we're not releasing those bound by injustices, setting free the oppressed, sharing our bread with the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, and doing good to our family and friends and fellow parishioners.

Fasting from luxury foods has no lasting value if it does not help us become more Christ-like to others.

Why do we forego meat on Fridays? If it's only out of duty, i.e. if we're only following the rules as dutiful Catholics, we miss the point and might as well eat steak. Either we're Christian for the sake of duty and obligation or we're a Christian of devotion. The dutiful Christian obeys God to the letter of the law. They go to Mass to save themselves from hell. This is a business relationship with God. Our part of the contract would be to obey God and his part of the contract would be to accept us into heaven. But that's self-focused. And it ignores that Jesus is the only true Savior and that salvation is a gift, which he freely and generously gives to everyone who truly wants it.

The devotional Christian obeys God because of a loving desire to serve him, which overflows to others.

Doing devotions (the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Stations of the Cross, etc.) doesn't make us devotional. True devotion is an exciting love affair with God in a way that benefits others. True devotion is a love so strong that we cannot look at a person who's suffering without wanting to help. It's a love so strong that even when others hurt us, we hurt for them because they have turned away from God, and if we can, we do something that gives them a dose of God's love.

To have this kind of devotion, we have to first know -- really know -- that God is devoted to us. To the extent that we fail to understand how wonderfully God loves us, that's how much we fail to love God, and to the extent that we fail to love God, that's how much we fail to love others.

Lord Jesus, give me the simplicity and humility I need so my mind and my heart may firmly trust in You. Amen.
